Secondo un'antica tradizione la torre del castello di Levizzano, che ancora oggi viene detta "Matildica", sarebbe stata costruita per volere di Matilde di Canossa, che fu signora di queste terre tra il XI e il XII secolo.
In realtà l'origine della torre potrebbe essere ancora più antica, visto che un primo nucleo fortificato esisteva in questo luogo fin dal IX secolo e nel 1038 è documentata la presenza di un castello circondato da mura. In quest'epoca il fortilizio si configurava probabilmente come un semplice recinto protetto da un fossato entro il quale dovevano trovarsi diversi edifici, tra cui la cappella castellana.
Col tempo il nucleo primitivo si ampliò e si dotò di ulteriori difese, tanto che nel Trecento il complesso comprendeva almeno due torri, il palazzo feudale e diverse costruzioni di servizio.
Verso la fine del Cinquecento fu costruita l'attuale chiesa, oggi sconsacrata, al posto dell'antica cappella.
Le dimensioni e la struttura del castello rimasero poi invariate nel corso dei secoli seguenti, fino alla fine del 1800, quando il Castello venne in possesso del Comune di Castelvetro e cominciarono ad essere effettuati i primi interventi di restauro.
Sono a tutt'oggi in fase di realizzazione progetti di restauro e riuso dell'intero castello, che fanno seguito agli interventi strutturali e di consolidamento effettuati a partire dal 1982.
Il palazzo feudale conserva interessanti affreschi cinquecenteschi e pregevoli soffitti a cassettoni dipinti, mentre all'interno della torre rimangono alcune tracce pittoriche in un locale probabilmente adibito a cappella privata. Di grande interesse è un passaggio sotterraneo di origine antichissima, tuttora percorribile, che collegava il palazzo alla torre.
Attualmente del complesso edilizio risultano ristrutturate e utilizzate la chiesa, la galleria, sede dell'Enoteca Comunale, e la Torre Matildica, nella quale hanno sede importanti, diverse associazioni: l'Associazione degli Esperti Degustatori dell'Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena, l'Associazione Modena a Tavola, L'Associazione degli Enologi ed Enotecnici italiani, l'Associazione Italiana Sommeliers, ed infine l'Associazione Terre si Castelvetro.

An ancient tradition has it that the tower of the castle of Levizzano, still called "Matildica", was commissioned by Countess Matilda of Tuscany, who owned this lands from the 11th to the 12th century.
In reality, the tower may be even older, since the nucleus of this fortification existed as early as the 9th century - the first reliable information about the Castle of Levizzano Rangone are found in a document dating back to 890 - and a document dated 1038 mentions the presence of a castle surrounded by walls. During this era the fortress was probably a simple enclosure protected by a moat, comprising a number of buildings including the castle chapel. Over time this original nucleus was extended and furnished with additional defensive structures, so that in the 14th century the complex included at least two towers, the feudal palace and various appurtenances.
The standing church, now deconsacrated, was built to replace the chapel at the end of the 16th century.
Dimensions and structure of the castle remained unchanged during the following centuries, until 1800, when the Castle became a property of the local government of Castelvetro who made the first restorations.
Projects of reuse of the whole castle are now being executed, after the structural and reinforcement interventions carried out as from 1982.
The feudal palace features interesting 16th century frescoes and noteworthy painted coffered ceilings, while traces of painting remain in the tower, in a room most likely used as a chapel. An underground passage of very ancient origin once connected the palace to the tower. Of notable interest, it can still be visited in all its lenght.
At present, the areas of the building which have been restored and are being used are the Church, the Gallery, seat of the Enoteca (the Wine Cellar), and the Matilda's Tower, seat of various, important associations (The Association of Balsamic Vinegar Tasters, the Association of Italian Sommeliers, the Association of Modena Restaurants' owners, the Italian Association of Oenology and Oenotechnology, and the Association "Terre di Castelvetro").

TERRE DI CASTELVETRO - L'ENOTECA COMUNALE

L'Associazione di produttori agro-alimentari "Terre di Castelvetro" nasce nel 1995 per iniziativa di alcuni produttori ed in collaborazione con l'Amministrazione Comunale di Castelvetro, per promuovere e difendere il territorio e i suoi prodotti tipici.
La sede è ubicata nella Torre matildica del Castello di Levizzano Rangone, destinazione quanto mai appropriata, in considerazione della vicinanza all'Enoteca Comunale, che si trova nella galleria dello stesso castello e raccoglie i prodotti degli associati.
L'associazione rappresenta mediante l'enoteca stessa, ove è possibile gustare prodotti locali, un'importante vetrina enologica del territorio: entrando all'Enoteca ci si ritrova in un ambiente che riporta alla mente profumi e ricordi ormai lontani nel tempo, che permangono vivi nei sapori dei prodotti proposti dall'Associazione direttamente al consumatore.
In particolare all'interno dell'Enoteca si può degustare il Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, accompagnato da altri prodotti locali con i quali si sposa perfettamente: un buon piatto di salumi, il Parmigiano Reggiano insaporito con l'Aceto Tradizionale di Modena, la Torta Ducale, gli Amaretti, il Miele e il Nocino.

TERRE DI CASTELVETRO - THE LOCAL WINE CELLAR

The association of Agro-foodstuff Producers "Terre di Castelvetro" was founded in 1995 on the will of some wine producers of the area and in co-operation with the local government of Castelvetro, to defend and promote our territory and its typical products.
Its seat, in the Torre Matildica (Matilda's Tower), of Levizzano Rangone's Castle, is extremely suitable, as it's so near to the Enoteca, the local Wine Cellar, which is inside one of the galleries of the castle and assembles all the "Terre di Castelvetro" gastronomic products.
Through the Enoteca, where it's possible to taste local products, the association represents an important oenological exhibition of the territory,: it recalls remote scents and memories, that are still alive in the tastes of the products that the association offers directly to the consumer.
In particular, the cellar offers the tasting of Castelvetro's Lambrusco Grasparossa, with other local products with which Lambrusco goes well together: charcuterie, Parmesan flavoured with Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, Torta Ducale, almond biscuits, honey and walnut liqueur.
